Steven Rantala

Assistant Director of Culinary

 

As of January 2024, Steve Rantala has taken on a new role within UMD Dining Services as the Assistant Director of Culinary. With his years of experience and dedication to the culinary arts, Steve has quickly risen through the ranks to become an esteemed member of the UMD Dining team.

Starting at UMD as a Sous Chef in the Main Production Kitchen in 2019 and then promoted to the Lead Manager of Superior Dining in 2021, Steve has significantly impacted the quality and variety of options offered to UMD students. His background in various culinary positions, including Sous Chef and Line Cook, has given him a well-rounded skill set and a deep understanding of the industry.

He has also been recognized for his talent and dedication, receiving the prestigious ACF Silver Medal Team Competition award from UMASS in 2022.

Outside of his professional life, Steve enjoys spending time with his family at the lake, experimenting with new recipes, and creating delicious maple syrup. One of the things that sets UMD Dining Services apart for him is the emphasis on work-life balance, which has been a refreshing change from the high demands of other food service positions.

Steve holds a Bachelor's of Science in Education from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2013.

With his expertise, leadership skills, and passion for providing exceptional dining experiences, it is no surprise that Steve has been promoted to the role of Assistant Director of Culinary. As he continues to inspire and innovate in the culinary world, Steve is sure to bring even more impressive achievements to UMD Dining Services.
