Food Allergies & Special Diets

Food Allergies & Intolerances

At UMD we take food allergies seriously. We realize that food allergies are a growing public health concern, with as many as 32 million people in the United States having food allergies. UMD Dining Services strives to provide safe, healthy, and tasty food to all students.

To enhance the safety of our students we take a number of preventative measures, including staff training, and point-of-sale allergen labeling. We label for the nine main allergens plus coconut (coconut is separated from other tree nuts). Please note that although we take great care to provide the most up-to-date information, there is the potential for menu substitutions. It is ultimately the responsibility of the student to ask questions and make safe and healthy choices while dining on campus.

Nine foods account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions, these include:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree Nuts
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Sesame

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE & MILK ALLERGIES

There are dairy alternatives available on campus at UMD. Soy Milk alternatives are offered in Superior Dining. In Northern Shores Coffee Shop they offer almond and oat milk alternatives for your coffee beverage.

NUT ALLERGIES

Superior Dining takes great care in serving minimal menu items containing peanuts or tree nuts. Superior Dining does provide peanut butter as an option for students, and Sun butter is an available option for those with nut allergies. To learn exactly which menu items may contain peanuts or tree nuts, please contact Savannah Villa. You can also reference the Nutrislice app and the identifiers on the buffet line to check if there are nuts or peanuts in an item.

GLUTEN INTOLERANCE/CELIAC DISEASE

UMD Dining Services has a number of specialty gluten-free products available. Including gluten-free crusts, buns, pastas and more.

While Dining Services takes great care in keeping some of our products gluten-free, items are prepared in a common kitchen which is not a gluten-free environment
