UMD Dining Services is proud to celebrate Director Betsy Helgesen on being named a 2026 Sustainability Inspiration Award recipient.

The Sustainability Inspiration Awards honor UMD students, staff, and faculty who are making meaningful contributions toward a more sustainable future—through leadership, innovation, and a deep commitment to environmental and community impact.

Betsy was recognized for her leadership in advancing sustainable operations across Dining Services. From implementing technology that reduces food waste to prioritizing safety, efficiency, and fresh, responsibly sourced food, her work continues to shape a more sustainable dining experience for the entire campus community.

A key part of this progress has been the integration of sustainability into the newly renovated production kitchen, allowing Dining Services to expand its capabilities while reducing waste and improving operational efficiency.

Turning Big Ideas Into Everyday Impact

Under Betsy’s leadership, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s built into how we operate every single day.

From reducing food waste with smarter technology, to creating safer and more efficient kitchens, to expanding fresh, scratch-made options for our campus—these efforts all add up. With our newly renovated production kitchen, we’re able to do even more, with less waste and more intention.

“This award was such a surprise and an honor to receive, but it reflects years of hard work from our entire Dining Services team. Sustainability is something we truly value in everything we do, and this recognition belongs to all of us.” — Betsy Helgesen

It Takes a Team

If you’ve ever grabbed a meal on campus, you’ve experienced this work firsthand.

It’s in the compostable packaging.
It’s in the way we plan menus.
It’s in the behind-the-scenes decisions that most people never see—but feel every day.

This recognition may have Betsy’s name on it, but it represents a team that shows up, thinks creatively, and keeps pushing for better.
